Petition Against NHS Funding of Homeopathy

Filed under: skepticism, medicine, homoeopathy — Derek Sorensen @ 9:42 pm

I don’t normally set a lot of store by petitions, but this I believe to be worth supporting.

We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to Immediately ban NHS funding of homoeopathy [sic] and redirect the resources to proven medicine.

So what’s this all about? In recent years homeopathy has begun making an entry into the NHS, so much so that recently £10 million of NHS funds was used to refurbish the Royal London Homeopathic hospital. This is only a good use of NHS funds if you approve of state-sponsorship of quackery.

Please Don’t Bounce Spam.

Filed under: Uncategorized — Derek Sorensen @ 6:30 pm

Here we go again. Another spammer has used one of my domains as his “from” address, as described in my article: Do You Bounce Spam? Stop Doing That!, and it seems that there are still plenty of Lusers out there who need a good LARTing with a Clue-By-Four.

Don’t be a Luser. Make sure your anti-spam solution doesn’t bounce emails back to the “sender”. Please.

Lies, Damned Lies, and Statistics

Filed under: networking, mathematics, skepticism — Derek Sorensen @ 6:32 pm

This quotation is often attributed to Mark Twain, but poor Mr Twain gets attributed with almost everything these days, along with Oscar Wilde and Winston Churchill. There’s a writeup from York University’s Mathematics Faculty about the true origin of the phrase, for anyone who is interested. But I digress.

Gullible People

Filed under: humour, ecademy — Derek Sorensen @ 12:01 am

Do you know someone who is terminally gullible? Do they believe every crackpot story they hear, spend thousands every year on ebooks from self-styled internet gurus who promise them the secret to riches? Do they believe that spirit mediums can contact the dead, or that homeopathic remedies can make you well? Do they pass on every “Virus Warning” they receive? Do they forward every email Chain Letter to “Ten of their contacts” in the hope that “Good luck will come [their] way today”?

Hand Me That Remote!

Filed under: skepticism — Derek Sorensen @ 7:32 pm

I almost never watch TV, but I’ll make sure I have control of the remote next week when Richard Dawkins’ new documentary The Enemies of Reason airs on Channel 4. The Times Online has a very entertaining writeup about it here and if the series is even half as entertaining, it’ll be a must-see for anyone tired of the flakes, fakes and frauds of the so-called “New Age”.

And A Side Order Of Quantums, Please

Filed under: skepticism — Derek Sorensen @ 3:33 pm

If you want your Woo to be accepted, it seems the best way is to mention Quantum Physics. But just how much Woo is there which tries to make itself seem “scientific” by adding a sprinkling of quantums?

A quick google for the phrase “Quantum Physics tells us” came up with a few links.

Let’s Make Those Skeptics Pay

Filed under: skepticism — Derek Sorensen @ 8:32 pm

Australian Skeptics have a longstanding $100,000 challenge to anyone with paranormal abilities. If you are a psychic, medium, spoon-bender, dowser; if you can divine the future using tarot cards, tea leaves or chicken giblets; if you can move objects at a distance using only the power of your mind; if you can talk to the dead; if you can heal the sick using nothing but “energy healing” then all you have to do is apply to Australian Skeptics, prove your amazing powers, and you win a cool $AUS 100,000. But wait, there’s more.

Early Morning Poetry

Filed under: humour, poetry, radio4 — Derek Sorensen @ 11:51 am

Rising uncharacteristically early this morning, I turned on the radio and tuned to Radio 4. By chance I caught the tail end of an Avant Garde poetry program, and although I’m not normally impressed with such things, preferring more traditional forms of poetry, I was blown away by the simplicity of structure, the tempo, and the apparent lack of respect for any established poetical conventions. Even though the words have no apparent meaning in themselves, they speak directly to the subconscious in a way I’ve not encountered before. Wonderful stuff!
